UN Ocean Conference & One Ocean Science Congress

The third United Nations Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the governments of France and Costa Rica, took place from June 9 – 13, 2025 in Nice, France. As the official United Nations convening on the ocean, the event brought together non-governmental organizations, universities, entrepreneurs, and delegates from Member States to deliver on the targets for Sustainable Development Goal 14, which aims to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.

The One Ocean Science Congress, a U.N. Special Event which served as a scientific foundation for the U.N. Ocean Conference, convened a week prior from June 3-6.

The week before the official convening of the United Nations Ocean Conference, the Blue Food Futures Program co-hosted a happy hour with Oceana to foster collaboration between ocean researchers and scientists.

Blue Food Futures Program member Jim Leape spoke at this panel event hosted by the Aquatic Blue Food Coalition, which explored the role of blue foods across three major 2025 policy milestones. The side event highlighted opportunities to accelerate action, enhance coordination, and center equity in food and climate solutions.

Advancing blue foods for sustainability, food security, and livelihoods

Co-chaired by Iceland and Brazil, this side event highlighted progress and new commitments, showcasing leadership by government representatives from Iceland, Madagascar, Indonesia, and other champions. Blue Food Futures members contributed to the development of the event, which spotlighted research and advocacy efforts to advance sustainable blue foods in the context of climate change, and officially launched an inaugural financial investment by the Aquatic Blue Food Coalition to support the integration of aquatic foods into national priorities.
