The G20, or Group of Twenty, is a strategic multilateral platform connecting the world’s major developed and emerging economies. Together, the G20 members represent more than 80 percent of world gross domestic product (GDP), 75 percent of international trade and 60 percent of the world population.

The Ocean 20 (O20), initiated by Indonesia in 2022 as part of their G20 presidency and with their long history of ocean stewardship, aimed to deliver concrete actionable policy recommendations and strategies for cooperation, on priorities set by each rotating presidency, to spur investment and growth in the ocean economy while protecting, restoring and regenerating it. O20 provided a platform for the world’s leading global companies, G20 countries and civil society voices to make and realize commitments towards a sustainable, inclusive ocean–and to leverage market opportunities in the ocean economy. The O20 was launched at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2022 and subsequently positioned as an official G20 Engagement Group.

Earlier this fall, Blue Food Assessment team members contributed to a Think20 (T20) policy brief highlighting Blue Food Assessment research findings and policy recommendations. At O20, Jim Leape, co-director of the Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions and Blue Food Assessment core team member, moderated a panel exploring blue food for inclusive growth.
